Buy something on a WHIM
Okay, I admit it, I am a very impulsive person - the kind that actually does buy that new brand of breath mints in the snazzy tin, or the High School Musical singing pen just because it is sitting at the cash register as I am pulling out my credit card. Impulsive, harmless, manageable. But every once in a while, my impulsivity leaps to a whole other level. Like this weekend.
It started out like any ol' Sunday. My husband and son at the Yankees game, and me and my girls at grandma's house. Yet, while the boys were buying the normal hot dog, cracker jacks and soda combo, the girls were not sticking to the usual purchase plan… Nope, not even close. Instead, on a whim, we stopped into the pet store that we always pass "just to pet the puppies" and walked out with a friggin' bird.
Told ya I was impulsive.
I know you can relate to this though, right? (I sure hope so!) I mean, the lady at the pet store was going on and on about this adorable Caique Mini Parrot that was perched on her shoulder; and though my daughters and I have never paid much attention to the cock-a-doodle-doo-ers, she had us at "he's a great pet for those not ready for a dog yet." And just as fast as I swiped the credit card, I suddenly found myself walking in the door to a husband who knew 'something fishy' was going on.
"Daddy, Daddy, we have a surprise for you!" the girls shouted, as my hubby, with that stern / half-smiling face said, "Laurie Jane, please tell me you didn't buy a dog."
Yep, he knew right away, that's how blatantly impulsive I obviously am.
"No, honey, not a dog … a bird! A mini Caique Parrot to be precise and here he is."
As both my son and my husband's jaws dropped to the floor, my two girls and I danced around the cage in delight, promising to take care of him and that "there will be NO BIRD POOP anywhere."
And like the good bird that Griffin has turned out to be, he worked his magic on the boys and instantly walked up my husband's arm and perched himself on his shoulder.
"A bird, he said, interesting .... hmmm, who would have thunk it? Good work girls." And there they stood; man and bird. (Editor's note: Not only am I impulsive, but I can justify anything into some sort of landmark, Kodak moment.) So there you have it, Griffin's homecoming; we all think it went quite well.
Moral of the Story? Well, fellow suburbanites, the next time you are feeling impulsive, take a pause, ponder the necessity of the purchase, and go out on a whim anyway!
